Zoltek Scaling Up on Low-Cost Precursor, Launches New Mat Product At its JEC stand, Zoltek advised that their Hungarian plant is successfully and commercially spinning its new, low-cost PAN precursor for use in making its carbon fibers. Also, carbon fiber prduction in Hungary with that precursor is being scaled up successfully.

As one Zoltek representative noted, "Within 60 days (circa the end of May 2001), the new precursor will be used throughout the system. We can say that we are in commercial production in Europe now, both qualified and scaled up. Soon after, it will be used in all plants." Of particular interest was his comment that "We are seeing carbon fiber modulus and tensile strengths higher than and more consistent than we get with the baseline...
