SGL CARBON 1ST QTR OPERATING PROFIT DOWN 30%.

SGL Carbon AG of Weisbaden, Germany, a producer of graphite electrodes for steel production, carbon fibers, and related products, said that its first-quarter operating profit fell 30% on greater start-up costs for new technologies, but it reiterated the full-year figure would about equal last year's.
First-quarter operating profit fell to 14 million euros ($12.25 million) on a 4% increase in sales to 300 million euros. SGL noted that it continues to forecast 2001 operating profit to be close to last year's level of 96 million euros. The decline in operating earnings was said to be largely due to higher costs in brake disc materials and fuel cell components, seen as major growth projects for the future.
