GM partners with hydrogen storage business for fuel cell cars.

GM announced 12 June that it has bought a 20 percent interest in Quantum Technologies Inc., a unit of Impco Technologies, Inc., based in Irvine, California.

According to Larry Burns, GM vice president for R&D and planning, "An alliance between GM and Quantum is the next logical step on this long road to a hydrogen future." [Fuel cells create electricity from a reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, with water vapor the only tailpipe emission.] Burns said current H2 tanks store the volatile gas at 2,500 to 3,000 pounds per square inch (psi) providing a driving range of about 100 miles (160 kilometers) to 150 miles (240 kilometers).
