Honeywell expands gel-spun Spectra(r) fiber manufacturing.

Advanced Materials & Composites News, November, 2001

The Specialty Materials business of Honeywell will expand Spectra high modulus polyethylene fiber capacity in Colonial Heights, Virginia to cover increased demand for the fiber and for Spectra Shield(r), for vehicular and personal body armor products.

The first phase for a $20 million investment will include the installation of a new gel-spinning line and additional drawing capacity, to be available by the end of the 3rd quarter 2002. The new line will be able to make a new generation of fibers for armor, rope, cut protection, and other markets.

The 2nd phase will encompass the building of a new HMPE plant. It will be designed to "take Spectra fiber properties to a new level." That site could be in the U.S., Europe, or Asia.
