JEC 2002 - 2nd Report - Mitsubishi Rayon Introduces New Carbon Fiber for Fuel Cells.

Advanced Materials & Composites News, June, 2002

Mitsubishi Rayon Co. Ltd of Tokyo, to develop new business for its carbon fibers, introduced its new Pyrofil(tm) carbon fiber material designated MFG-070-300 for PEM (proton exchange membrane) fuel cell gas diffusion layers. The reason for using carbon fibers is their stiffness and resistance to high temperatures and acidic conditions.

According to MRC, carbon fiber is the only workable substrate for this application at present. A partner of MRC makes the paper in small rolls with a 152mm diameter core tube, with greater automation possible later on. Chopped carbon fibers are bonded into the paper or mat format using phenolic resin. A "special" carbon fiber is used with a small filament diameter, built around a small precursor but with a large tow input. Such...
