Largest British Utility Moving into Renewable Energy, Including Wind Energy.

August 6, 2003 - Centrica plc, the U.K.'s largest energy supplier, recently announced plans to invest 500 million pounds ($805 million) in renewable energy resources during the next 5 years. Its goal is to be producing 1,000 megawatts of electricity from renewable sources, including from wind turbines, by the end of the decade.

Centrica spokespeople said the company also is currently negotiating with joint venture partners to spend one billion pounds (about $1.6 billion) to build offshore wind farms. According to Centrica's chief executive Roy Gardner, the timing appears right to move into renewables because the economics have improved and the technology has advanced rapidly.
