First GM Fuel Cell Powers Dow Chemical Site in Texas.

February 10, 2004 - Officials in a Texas ceremony inaugurated operations of a single fuel cell that will convert hydrogen into electricity. U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham and Texas Governor Rick Perry pulled a level to begin the Phase 1 installation operations at a Dow Chemical Company plant in Freeport, Texas.

The initial General Motors Corporation fuel cell will generate 75 kilowatts of power, providing enough electricity for 50 average homes. Dow and GM intend to prove the viability of hydrogen fuel cells for a large industrial power system. Operation of the first cell will last four to six months with more fuel cells and electrical generating capacity added during the summer months.
