Qantas Signs Orders for 12 Blended Winglet Shipsets with Options for 42 Additional Shipsets.

May 25 -- Qantas installed its first shipset of Aviation Partners Boeing Blended Winglets(TM) in January 2000 and currently operates a fleet of 21 winglet equipped NG 737-800s. With this order for 12 additional shipsets, Qantas will be operating 33 Blended Winglet Equipped 737s by the end of 2005.

Blended Winglets help Qantas shave over 3% off annual fuel bills for each 737-800 it operates and up to 5% when flying longer haul missions at the design limits of the aircraft. Also, by improving takeoff performance at obstacle-limited runways, a Blended Winglet Equipped Qantas 737-800 can depart with 3100 kg more payload than a non-wingleted aircraft.
