MTA Sees Carbon Fiber Composites Might Fit in Subway Plans for Blast Resistance.

July 5, 2004 - The Post in Boston reports that the MTA is considering the use of lightweight materials that would sustain the force of a bomb blast. The plan may involve putting CFRP composite wallpaper on the inside of subway tunnels. Carbon-fiber and epoxy composites would contain the force of the explosion and reduce the impact of shrapnel.

Chuck King, a spokesman for Jacobs Engineering, said the company is working with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to address the vulnerability of tunnels to blasts. Since 9/11, the MTA has been seeking to reinforce its tunnels - particularly the eight concrete tunnels that run under the East River, officials said.
