DB plans remain entrenched

Susan Barreto LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. - Defined benefit plans are entrenched in the nonprofit hospital arena, along with conservative investment approaches, according to a survey by Hewitt Associates. The survey, 'Hospital and Multi-Hospital System Investment Practice 1998,' reveals only 19% of hospitals have added 401(k) plans since the survey was last completed in 1996, the same year the Internal Revenue Service approved regulations allowing the plans to be used by nonprofit hospitals.
