Byline: Benjamin Seeder PARIS - The French government is heading for a showdown with trade unions this year over proposals to reform public sector pensions. A spokesman at France's third-biggest union, Force Ouvriere, Paris, confirmed it would not be attending this month's talks with the government, aimed at winning union support for reform.

Union officials made the announcement in mid-December, amid mounting pressure from the European Union and business interests at home on French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin to tackle pension reform, after a European Union report released early in December cited France as a laggard.
