Jeffrey R. Immelt, chairman and chief executive officer of General Electric Co., doesn't serve on any corporate board outside of GE. General Electric policy, in fact, prohibits company senior executives from serving on boards of other companies. The only exception is executives who serve from time to time on boards of companies in which GE has an investment interest or relationship.

But that policy doesn't mean General Electric bans CEOs of other companies from serving on its board. On the contrary, it values their advice as directors. GE's current board is made up six current CEOs, including Mr. Immelt. Shareholder activists have been pressuring corporations to reduce the outside directorships of CEOs.
