Ford fest follow-ups The story about the flathead V8 in the Ford issue (June 16) was great, especially the way it placed that engine in historical perspective. My friend's '51 Mercury now has the "little'' Ford flathead, since the original Merc block cracked for lack of antifreeze. Even that biggish car glides nicely at 70 mph with an engine like the one from a "cheap'' 1932 car.

I wish more people would keep flatheads in their "restored'' Fords and Mercs that I see at car shows instead of installing late-model powertrains. C.B. Gerhart, Kokomo, Ind. Your ...
