Byline: J.P. VETTRAINO Laguna Seca is dusty, with abrasive tarmac that's usually hot and tough on tires. Its straights are short and a race driver has the steering wheel turned most of the way around, yet speeds are high. Laguna delivers a lot of aerodynamic downforce but not much mechanical grip.

Race setups are a compromise, because what works best for the hairpin won't work going up the hill on the backside. The demands on drivers aren't always apparent to fans on the hillsides. The pace is fierce, margins for error are small and full-course cautions traditionally infrequent. ...
