Byline: STEVEN COLE SMITH During the first half of the Champ Car Grand Prix of Road America, he had the dominant car, setting a succession of fastest laps of the race, and at one point, he led by more than 22 seconds over second place. But the Newman-Haas driver and the Champ Car champion and points leader finished third and missed an opportunity to wrap up the 2006 points championship with two races to go.

"And that,'' said Sebastien Bourdais, "is why I am not smiling.'' Team Forsythe driver A.J. Allmendinger smiled enough for both of them. He was happy with his fifth win of the season, and just as happy his championship hopes-marginal though they might be-will live at least until the next race on Oct. 22 in Australia.
