More people need to live and shop in downtown Palatine if the area is going to undergo a successful revitalization, village planners say. But bringing in roughly 100 new residents in a six-story, 50- unit condominium building near the train tracks doesn't appeal to everyone, particularly those who live next door.

Wellington Partners Inc. is proposing to demolish the vacant house and dry cleaners on the north side of Colfax Street, between Smith and Brockway streets, and build a brick building with indoor parking on the ground level and five stories of condominiums above it. The Palatine plan commission will consider the proposal May 16. The development would be precedent-setting since it's among the first major projects proposed in the downtown business...
