New shopping area takes step forward along Randall Road.(News)

South Elgin's new Jewel-Osco along a barren stretch of Randall Road soon may get some company. A shopping center, West Suburban Bank and Ziegler's Ace Hardware store are proposed next to the supermarket. The Jewel sits on a 20- acre lot at the northeast corner of McDonald and Randall roads.

Not yet named, the center would eventually hold up to 24 retailers as well as provide space for up to three more businesses along Randall. The entire project is estimated at $8 million to $10 million. South Elgin planning and zoning commissioners voted 5-0 Wednesday to recommend approval of the project.
