Milk suburbs' ties to Bush Now that a Republican occupies the White House again, the GOP- dominated suburbs may reap some rewards. During the Clinton years, Chicago tended to benefit, since Mayor Richard Daley strongly supported the Clinton-Gore administration and his brother William served as its Commerce Secretary.
U.S. House Speaker Denny Hastert now becomes Illinois' hotline to White House. President George W. Bush will be depending on Hastert, who represents Kane and western DuPage counties, to shepherd his agenda through the House, where Republicans hold a slim majority.
