The horse-inspired namesake first surfaced in 1958 at Chevrolet, General Motors' volume leading division. The large sedan enjoyed a three decade ride until 1986 when Caprice entered the picture to take the place as Chevrolet's large sedan offering.

After a brief hiatus, the Impala name reappeared as a high performance, V-8 powered, rear-drive trim level in the Caprice family between 1994 and 1996.
