While it is a given Kmart eventually will close hundreds of unprofitable locations among its 2,113 U.S.

stores, it also has to establish an identity that will attract customers and clean up its act, so to speak, by making improvements at the stores that remain open. For the short term, customers should notice little difference at the 105-year-old chain except perhaps for less selection and nervous employees.
