Byline: Mick Zawislak Daily Herald Staff Writer Besides two countywide races, voters in southern Lake County will decide the outcome of some hot state races that could have implications for the balance of political power. Because it's new, the 59th House District centered in the Vernon Hills area has been a priority for both parties.

Democrats hold a slim six-seat lead in the House, and this is considered one of the top races in the state. Democrat Kathy Ryg and Republican Roger Byrne have been in a slugfest, with both candidates accusing the other of dirty politics. Both live in Vernon Hills.
