The solution to this problem has been created by an ingenious company called StuffBak, www.stuffbak.com.
The company provides labels (which cost about $2 each) that you stick on your valuables, and which list a toll-free phone number good Samaritans can call when they find your lost object. The label offers a reward. When the finder calls in, he is instructed how to send the item to StuffBak at no cost. You are then notified and the item is sent back to you.
