Byline: Eric Krol Daily Herald Political Writer The crowded Republican U.S. Senate primary field will narrow by one today as John Cox is expected to withdraw and throw his support to state Sen. Steve Rauschenberger of Elgin. The departure of Cox, a Chicago businessman, leaves eight candidates who say they intend to run in the March primary to replace outgoing Republican U.S.

Sen. Peter Fitzgerald of Inverness as the GOP nominee. Cox finished third with 23 percent in last year's three-way Republican U.S. Senate primary won by Jim Durkin, who went on to lose to Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Springfield.
