Pledge ruling story marred by bias I was disappointed to see that your newspaper, of which I am a regular reader, printed a June 15 story headlined "'Under God' to stay in pledge," contributed by so blatantly biased a source as the Christian Science Monitor. The story contains troublesome turns of phrase that, although seemingly benign, state matters of opinion as fact and create undue slant on a rather straightforward news item.
The article addresses the Supreme Court's ruling that a California atheist has no right to challenge the inclusion of the reference to God in the Pledge of Allegiance - which his daughter recites daily at school. The troublesome phrases come early in the piece. First, the author says, "The California atheist, who ... should...
