When the sluggish trip gets a little longer than normal, the veteran commuter notices. With all that time to ponder why - and having spotted someone at the traffic signal box - he wrote to ask: "What's up?" Turns out Harland is a pretty observant guy.

Illinois Department of Transportation traffic signal engineer Steve Travia says several equipment malfunctions have messed up an already challenging intersection in recent weeks.
