Byline: Jon Davis Daily Herald Staff Writer If that smoke wafting near downtown Des Plaines Saturday morning had a funky smell, well, the cause was sufficient. Des Plaines firefighters were sent around 9 a.m. to the Northwestern Woods Forest Preserve along Joseph Schwab Road, where someone had set a plastic portable toilet ablaze.
"We got there and it was just a small pile of burning plastic," Des Plaines Fire Lt. Jim Hall said. No one was hurt, he said. This was the fifth or sixth such incident this summer, which "tends to tell you somebody might be playing games," Hall said, adding there's no real way to catch the culprit or culprits unless they're there when authorities arrive.
