Byline: Mike Spellman Daily Herald Sports Writer Almost as soon as it began, the Matt Lawton era with the Cubs came to an end. Acquired on July 31 from Pittsburgh in exchange for Jody Gerut, the 33-year-old left fielder was traded Friday night to the New York Yankees for minor-league pitcher Justin Berg.

"It was a situation where (Yankees general manager) Brian Cashman was pursuing me for a little while on Matt," Cubs GM Jim Hendry said. "He will obviously help them in the race, and at the same time we picked up a quality young kid, who has familiarity to our area.
