Byline: Mark Billings The Great Depression starting in 1929 sent many Americans to near-despair but those stark economic days were an inspiration to the late Edna Louise Logan of Elgin. In her early 40s at the time, Logan volunteered her services for four years as director of the Family Welfare Association, an umbrella group for Elgin charities.
She then became the group's first paid director when federal aid became available and held the position for 12 years. Logan went on during World War II to lead a blood donor center at the Elgin Red Cross mobile unit, and became an active fund- raiser for the Elgin YWCA and Sherman Hospital. She was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Elgin Cosmopolitan Club in 1934, and capped off...
