Byline: Kathryn Grondin Daily Herald Staff Writer Dozens of suburban residents remain on standby to help with hurricane relief efforts, while several others are making their way south to help in the disaster areas. Gov. Rod Blagojevich authorized the Illinois National Guard on Wednesday to travel to Louisiana to assist in Hurricane Katrina cleanup efforts.

Up to 300 guardsmen and women are expected to leave Friday morning in about 50 military vehicles. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the people of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama whose homes and communities have been shattered by this devastating storm," Blagojevich said in a statement.
