Byline: Jerry Turnquist Gregg Ziegler of Barrington vividly recalls the story his father used to tell him about a day in 1930. His father, Lyle Ziegler, was walking in downtown Elgin when he met George Glos, president of the First National Bank of Elgin. The conversation that followed changed the lives of the Ziegler family for years to come.
"How would you like to buy the Meehan Hardware Store?" the top executive asked Lyle Ziegler. "Times being what they were, we didn't have much expendable income, but Mr. Glos proposed a way to help my father finance the hardware store," Gregg Ziegler said. "Soon, Meehan Hardware Store became Z&R Hardware." It's a family business that has grown to include 10 stores as it marks its 75th anniversary this year....
