Byline: Nadia Malik Daily Herald Staff Writer So far, about 1,000 families in Peru have Robby Klaber to thank for the clean air in their homes. Klaber, a Buffalo Grove resident who is attending Brown University, started the Strike Out Smoke project his junior year at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire because he saw how much Peruvian families needed new stoves.
The idea started after he went to Peru after his sophomore year to work on developing a cleaner water system. "Just one of the things I had seen was that rural Peruvians use this old traditional cooking stove that doesn't have any ventilation system," Klaber said.
