Newell was assigned in 1954 to naming the company's newest product: its turkeys. Knowing that they aimed to provide families with a plumper, juicier turkey, Mr.
Newell started brainstorming for names that would conjure up that image, family members said. "He looked up 'butterball' in the dictionary, and it said, 'a fat, chunky person,' " his daughter Marjorie Bennett of Fox Lake said. "He thought, 'We have a fat, chunky turkey,' so that's how he named the Butterball turkey. "He always loved to tell that story," Bennett said. "Now, it's a household word."
