Byline: Eric Krol Daily Herald Political Writer Democratic U.S. Sen. Barack Obama applauded President Bush's withdrawal Wednesday of a nominee involved with a controversial political attack ad, but his campaign doesn't know if Obama will return a contribution he got from another donor to the group.

Sam Fox, a St. Louis businessman, wanted to be U.S. ambassador to Belgium. But Obama and other Senate Democrats torpedoed Fox's nomination because Fox gave $50,000 to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. That group ran ads attacking in 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry on his Vietnam War record - creating a firestorm credited with stalling Kerry's momentum coming out of his party's convention.
