Stiffer fines proposed: Drivers who repeatedly violate handicapped-parking laws soon may face fines of up to $1,000 under a plan endorsed by a state Senate committee Wednesday. Proposed by Secretary of State Jesse White, the plan would increase fines for abusing disability placards and license plates.
A second offense would carry a fine of $750 and third offense of $1,000. "It is unbelievable that able-bodied people would time and time gain abuse this important program and take parking spaces reserved for persons with disabilities," White said. Violators also could have driving privileges revoked or have their disability plate or placard taken away. In order to use the handicapped spaces, the handicapped person must actually be present.
