New 'hammer' at Harper: The Harper College chemistry department is getting a new piece of equipment: a 90 MegaHertz Eft Fourier Transform Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrometer. It's called a NMR for short, and the reason it's coming is because of a $137,900 grant from the National Science Foundation.

Referred to as the "carpenter's hammer of chemistry," this tool is used by organic chemists to determine the structure of molecules. Harper will be one of only a few community colleges to have this device. Latest poets at Tuesday slam: The Palatine/Inverness Arts Council will host its monthly poetry slam from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St. The event will feature a performance from up-and-coming Texas poet, Eric Breland, at 7 p.m....
