Byline: Anna Marie Kukec akukec@@dailyherald.com When John A. Canning Jr. of Inverness met John Edwardson, neither man realized how their paths would cross more than a decade later. At the time, Canning was president of First Chicago Venture Capital, an arm of First National Bank of Chicago.

Edwardson was chief financial officer of Ameritech and later chief operating- officer of United Airlines Inc. In 1992, the venture arm spun off with funding from the bank and Canning founded Madison Dearborn Partners, now a powerful equity investment firm in downtown Chicago. Its portfolio has included Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, PayPal, Boise Cascade Holdings, Cinemark, Tuesday Morning and Yankee Candle Co. By 2001, Edwardson had become CEO of Vernon Hills-based CDW...
