Airlines see small bump in hiring United jobs down, but adding staff.(Business)

Byline: Anna Marie Kukec akukec@@dailyherald.com While the U.S. airline industry employed about 409,600 workers as of April, an increase of about 1 percent compared to a year ago, some legacy carriers such as United Airlines continued to show declines. The legacy carriers as a group reported a 0.7 percent decrease, according to data from the U.S.
Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The data, April being the latest figures available, reflects full-time equivalent workers, so two part-timers would equal one full-time person. Such legacy carriers have been traumatized since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and some recently emerged from bankruptcy.
