General manager Dale Tallon plans to be active in the free-agent market when the NHL signing period begins Sunday. To what extent, however, he won't say. It isn't likely that the Hawks will be one of the teams going after top-end free-agent forwards such as Ryan Smyth, Daniel Briere, Chris Drury, Scott Gomez, Peter Forsberg or Paul Kariya.
Nor is Tallon expected to pursue the best defensemen available, such as Scott Hannan, Sheldon Souray, Brad Stuart or Brian Rafalski. What the Hawks can be expected to do is attempt to sign a center with some offensive punch, a puck-moving defenseman and perhaps another winger - all of whom would come from...
