Governor should be in Springfield As a former state legislator for eight years (1962-1970), and as House Majority Leader in my final term, I was shocked to learn in 2002 that Gov. Blagojevich was refusing to move into the governor's executive mansion in Springfield after his election. In so doing, he abandoned a rich tradition that had been followed by every Illinois governor, to my recollection.

Since that time, I have considered this refusal to be the biggest slap in the face to the residents of Sangamon County that any governor could possibly deliver. The tradition and heritage of our governor residing in the Springfield mansion provided for him by the citizens of Illinois has been significant and meaningful.
