Byline: Corrinne Hess chess@@dailyherald.com Don't let the asphalt fool you. The new road slated for construction at Redwing Slough conservancy just outside of Antioch is not meant as a welcome sign. The Illinois Department of Transportation will replace the conservancy's gravel road with a $312,000 road next month.
Chris McCloud, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, said the long-term plan for the area has always been to build an access road for state vehicles. "It is a natural area and the main purpose is for it to retain a natural habitat," McCloud said. "This is not a state park."
