Sep. 2--In one of the worst retail environments in decades, Peter Posch and Andre Haugaard came up with what many would have thought was a crazy idea: franchise their contemporary furniture store.

Nearly 18 months later, the duo has sold 21 of the available 24 franchises of The Ambiente Collection. Six stores have opened in places such as Beverly Hills, Calif.; Chicago and Washington. The rest will open around the country in the next few years.
