Cutbacks to Cost at Least 70 Hospital Jobs in Tacoma, Wash. (Originated from The Tacoma Morning News Tribune, Wash.)

Jul. 9--Between 70 and 80 health care workers at Tacoma General and Mary Bridge Children's hospitals will lose their jobs as a result of cutbacks announced Thursday by hospital executives.

They blame the layoffs on a decline in the number of hospitalized patients, a trend that has hit hospitals nationwide.

Multicare, the not-for-profit organization that operates both Tacoma hospitals, met with employees Thursday to outline details of the layoff plan.

About half of the layoffs will involve registered nurses, Multicare vice president Joy Follis said.

The layoffs, which take effect in two weeks, come from a total of more than 2,100 employees at both institutions.
