Apartment Market Jump Has Investors Swarming in Arizona Town. (Originated from The Phoenix Gazette)

Aug. 5--While the Valley's single-family housing market grabs most of the fanfare, the apartment sector quietly is showing signs of new life.

Second quarter vacancy rates dipped to their lowest level since 1984, and average rental rates continues to climb. The two factors traditionally are the first signs of a rebound.

"We're pretty confident we'll see more rent increases in the fall, maybe 5 to 10 percent," said David Wetta, regional manager of Marcus & Millichap, a real estate investment firm.

"We could see a recovery by late 1994 or 1995." The apartment market has limped since massive overbuilding in the mid- 1980s.
