Texas County Denies Apple Tax Break, Citing Pro-Gay Policy. (Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Dec. 1--Opening a new battleground in one of the nation's most bitter culture wars, a Texas county refused Tuesday to give Apple Computer Inc. an otherwise routine tax break because of its objections to Apple's pro-gay employment policies.

The surprise 3-2 vote by the commissioners of Williamson County, which includes parts of Austin, is believed to mark the first time that local tax codes have been used by conservative politicians in an escalating fight over gay-related issues, as well as the first time a government body has targeted a specific company because of its gay-related personnel policies.

Opponents said they had strong objections to Apple's granting "domestic partner" benefits to gay and lesbian couples, a practice being taken...
