Phoenix Temporary Workers Find Holiday Jobs Scarce at Small Businesses. (Originated from The Arizona Republic, Phoenix)

Dec. 7--It may be a sign of the economic times: Small-business owners this holiday season appear to be holding the line on hiring temporary workers to help out with pre-Christmas sales.

Instead, they're making more use of existing part-time help. "We're all working longer hours, instead of hiring someone new," said Pepper Rusnak, owner of Write-Ons, Etc., a Phoenix stationery store. Rusnak, another full-time worker and five part-timers staff the shop.

Rusnak's comments reflect those of most other small-business owners informally surveyed on their holiday-season hiring practices.

Dan Anderson, research administrator with the state Department of Economic Security, said modest seasonal hiring has been "a fairly common trend in the past few years."...
