Dec. 19--Harry Hammerly's tenure as managing director of 3M Co.'s Japanese subsidiary nearly 20 years ago profoundly affected his management style.
Hammerly, then 41 and a native of St. Paul's East Side, found it difficult to adapt to working in a foreign country with a different language and customs. "I figured out there were things I would never figure out," recalls Hammerly, now 3M executive vice president of international operations.
So, as managing director of Sumitomo 3M Ltd., Hammerly learned to communicate clearly, pick talented subordinates and be an approachable executive. "That experience gave me a lot of confidence in my judgment and way of managing," he notes.
