U.S. Automakers Pleased with Results of 1993 Sales. (Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

DETROIT--Jan. 5--Domestic automakers had their best year in recent memory in 1993, with both Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp. posting impressive double-digit gains in vehicle sales.
Even giant General Motors Corp., which has lost sales, money and prestige so far this decade, saw its sales of cars and light trucks grow 5.9 percent over 1992.
Although a few European makers didn't tally their 1993 books Tuesday, overall U.S. sales were estimated at 14.2 million vehicles, up from 13.1 million in 1992. Industry executives are predicting sales of 15 million or more in 1994.
