Builder Takes Advantage of New Enterprise Zone in Arizona. (Originated from The Phoenix Gazette)

Feb. 24--Stretching from west Phoenix to the Yuma County line, the state's largest and newest enterprise zone is helping bring more jobs to the area.

Gov. Fife Symington on Wednesday announced the creation of the Western Maricopa County Enterprise Zone, made up of 13 cities, 200,000 residents and 5,600 square miles.

The designation means that businesses expanding or relocating in the area can obtain state income tax credits of up to $5,000 for each zone resident they hire. To qualify as an enterprise zone, an area must record unemployment or poverty levels 150 percent above the state average.

The unemployment rate for the zone stands at nearly 24 percent. The statewide jobless rate is 6 percent.
