May 2--The soaring estimates of the number of people scurrying to get ''on the Internet" belie the fact that for all but highly skilled techies it is nearly impossible to gain access to the vast resources of the global computer network.

That soon may change. To capitalize on the crush of interest since Vice President Al Gore and others began to tout the Internet as a scale model of the "information superhighway," at least a half-dozen companies are racing to offer an easier way to get on-line.

"We're going to provide it for the Aunt Mollys and the Uncle Bills," said Bob Rieger, the founder of Netcom On-Line Communication Services Inc. in San Jose, one of the fastest-growing providers of access to the Internet for companies and techno-savvy individuals....
