May 16--Virtual reality isn't a fantasy anymore. The fledgling industry is no longer just the domain of mad scientists in bad movies like "The Lawnmower Man" or demented cult leaders in bad TV miniseries like "Wild Palms."

Real-world virtual reality is rapidly growing and profitable in, of all places, theme parks.

Paramount's Great Ameri-CHca in Santa Clara opened the first large-scale virtual reality ride in Northern California twoCHmonths ago: "Days of Thunder, " simulating every stomach-churning spin-out in a 200 mph stock car race.

"Motion rides," which combine big-screen movies with hydraulically controlled passenger cabins or seats, are the first chance most people are getting to experience virtual reality.
